Project Description
Nemours is one of North America's largest children's health systems, owning and operating the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, as well as four major Children's specialty centers in Wilmington, Delaware; Jacksonville, Orlando; and Pensacola, Florida.
Nemours' relationship with CHE began in 2001 when the Nemours Foundation Education Committee funded an evidence-based health care initiative within their hospital system. The Nemours Foundation took a train-the-trainer approach by providing unique educational opportunities to a select group of mentors from across the Nemours hospital system (physicians, nurses, allied health professionals). This group received access to a series of educational learning units on evidence-based practice and bimonthly training sessions with CHE.
This project encouraged clinicians to incorporate high-quality evidence in their day-to-day decision making. All clinicians have access to an evidence-based practice desktop that provides quick access to evidence-based resources within their local library collection. In addition, the project developed a system whereby all staff could earn continuing medical education credits for using evidence-based resources and educational learning units.
Ideas about how the relationship between Nemours and CHE can continue to grow is being explored.
CHE's Role
CHE developed a custom Internet desktop (Nemours Desktop) that integrates knowledge resources from the Thomas Jefferson University Library (Jeffline) and the Nemours Library, with evidence-based practice educational materials. The Nemours Desktop is available to all Nemours Foundation staff members.
CHE provided bimonthly educational sessions to all project mentors on topics such as developing and using embedded evidence, case-based instruction, and evidence-based practice continuing professional development. CHE also developed all educational materials and has continued to make them accessible within the desktop environment. Newer adaptations of the Nemours desktop include training videos and interactive learning sessions. These have limited the need for continuing biweekly sessions. Instead, two two-day workshops (Delaware and Florida locations) were offered in the fall of 2005.
