Project Description
The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) is responsible for the overall management and delivery of this bilingual program, Executive Training for Research Application (EXTRA) / Formation en recherche pour cadres qui exercent dans la santé (FORCES) Program. The program encourages leaders within Canada's health system - nurse, physician, and health administration executives - to find and apply research in their day-to-day work, facilitate evidence-based decision-making, and participate in continuing executive development opportunities. EXTRA/FORCES is building capacity towards evidence-based decision-making in the management of Canadian healthcare delivery.
Participants enroll in a two-year EXTRA/FORCES fellowship, held concurrently and complementarily with a job in a home organization. The experience incorporates interactive self directed learning, six residential sessions, an intervention project, mentoring and networking activities, supported by CHE's virtual desktop environment that supports learning in either of the official languages of choice. Currently, up to 26 fellows a year are selected to participate.
CHE's Role
This flagship program highlights the University of Alberta's leadership in the development, deployment and evaluation of evidence-based health information systems. The Centre for Health Evidence was awarded a multi-year grant to build and support the online community of practice for this new national initiative. CHE was chosen because of its demonstrated expertise in developing and nurturing virtual learning communities and its leading edge Internet technologies. In addition to providing the online environment, Dr. Robert Hayward is lead faculty for the Health Information Management curriculum that is horizontally integrated across the two years; Louisa Fricker is a guest faculty. Other CHE staff attend residential sessions in a supportive role to faculty as well as ensuring the technical infrastructure is performing optimally to support learning.
