CHE Announces EXTRA Partnership

2004 February

The Centre for Health Evidence, a Department of Medicine research group at the University of Alberta, has been awarded a 3 year grant (renewable for 10 years) to build and support an online community of practice for a new national knowledge-transfer initiative.

This flagship program helps establish the University of Alberta’s leadership in the development, deployment and evaluation of evidence-based health information systems. CHE was chosen because of its demonstrated expertise in developing and nurturing virtual learning communities and its leading edge internet-technologies.

Funded by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF), the new Executive Training for Research Application (EXTRA) Program will help health care’s leaders - nurse, physician, and health administration executives - find and apply research in their day-to-day work, facilitate evidence-based decision-making, and participate in continuing executive development opportunities. EXTRA builds towards a healthcare system where its leaders collaborate in teams of evidence-based decision-makers. EXTRA fellows complete a two-year, credited learning experience and then become part of a national virtual learning community. Up to 24 fellows a year are selected to participate, with applications for the first year being received now.

CHE is expected to conduct needs analysis on two other CHSRF Programs (CADRE and Broker programs) in order to determine the best way to meet their needs. Work on these programs will begin in 2004.
